The Lovable Pop Up

Peel Away Ads are the latest development in pop up software. The pop up has under gone many changes in the last few years but one thing has remained constant. People don't like them and find them irritating and bothersome. The number of pop up blockers on the market today is a bold testiment to this.

The only people that like pop ups are the people that use them. This is because, despite the anoyances that they cause, they are effective. Attempts to block pop ups have become futile. They can stop your standard pop up, which opens a new browser window, but the latest generation of fly-ins, slide-ins, spin-ins, etc....are scripts which are part of the webpage itself and much more difficult to defeat.

Peel Away Ads are a pop up users dream. Wether a pop up glides in, flies in, or just appears, they still obstruct the users view of whatever website they happen to be looking at. Peel Away Ads are not only non intrusive, they are actually enticing. The ad appears as a small flashing corner of the page that is curled back. When you move your mouse over it, the corner peels back like the page of a book to reveal the offer. (click here for example)

These promise to be the future of pop ups. Let's face it, everybody hates pop ups, but they are an effective marketing strategy. Listen To This Rant About Pop Ups - Most People I Know Really Hate Them

Why Use Pop Up Advertising?

Are pop ups dead? Not yet but there is about to be a changing of the guard with a new product called Peel Away Ads. Pop ups are still one of the most effective marketing tools around. Even though most people can't stand them, they seem to get the job done.

A lot of time and money has been spent developing software to defeat pop ups and were quite successful. The only problem is that the software developers were also able to design pop up like ads that defeated the "pop up stopper" software.

This was actually easy to achieve. Your standard pop up opens another browser window although it may be a small one. The newer pop ups, fly-ins, slide-ins, spin-ins, or whatever little trick they perform, are actually java scripts that are part of the websites html code. This ensures that the ad gets seen and not blocked.

Statistics show that over 80% of standard pop ups currently are being blocked by software that has been purchased and installed or that is a built in function of many web browsers. The only way the newer type of ad can be stopped is by turning java off in your browser settings.

Normally people won't turn java off because there are a lot of java driven items on the web today that greatly enhance the web surfing experience. The java driven ads can be configured where you must view and close them before you can proceed.

This again guarantees that your ad will be seen, but it also multiplies the general irritation that is associated with pop ups. People don't like to be forced to view something. That is why your experienced marketer knows when and how to use a pop up.

The last generation of pop up, we are going to talk about the newest in a minute, is highly configurable. You can specify what part of the scree it comes from, how big it is, how it departs, and most importantly, when it appears.

The wise advertiser will make a guess at how long it takes a visitor to read to a certain part of the website and then have the pop up appear when they have just finished reading a section that is relevant to the offer in the pop up. I know marketers that use this technique to increase their opt ins to a newsletter or free report by 4-10x the normal sign up rate.

This is one of the reasons that pop ups continue to be popular amongst marketers despite their bad reputaion with web site viewers. I think that bad reputation is about to come to an end.

The latest and greatest generation of pop up is called Peel Away Ads. These ads use a different psychological approach. Instead of forcing the offer in front of the viewer, these nifty little ads play on the viewer's curiosity. They appear in the upper right hand corner as the "dog eared" page of a book that flashes and says "check this out".

It is actually quite enticing. When you move your mouse over to the flashing corner, the page peels back like the page of a book revealing the offer underneath. You can then click on the offer and be taken to another page or to where ever you configure it to.

I have seen one page where it activates a fly-in pop up with an opt in form. I have a feeling that in the near future we are going to see some very creative things done with these ads once the word gets out and people start seeing results with them.

I have already read that Celebrety Cruiselines is using an ad where the page tears down the middle and peels away in two directions revealing the ad underneath. I expect to see a lot of variations on this theme shortly.

The effectiveness of these ads remain to be seen. They have only been on the market for a few weeks but you have to love them. No need for a blocker when you use peel away ads.
